Mission Bay Tennis Club is proud to Head Coach Nelson Cuellar. Nelson has been a high-performance player since the age of 8 and has over 18 years of coaching experience across the USA, Europe and NZ. He is a Tennis NZ Registered Coach and an ITF Level 2 Club Professional Coach who brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for Tennis to our Club.

1. QUICKSTART PROGRAMME – 6-WEEKS BEGINNER COURSE –
The “Quickstart Programme” for beginners is a tailored approach to introducing new players to tennis in a fun and accessible way. This format uses softer, lower pressure balls and modified equipment to reduce the learning curve and make the game more enjoyable and less intimidating for adult beginners.
Introduction to tennis basics
The “Quickstart Programme” starts with an introduction to the basics of tennis, including grip, stance, and swing technique. Participants will learn the proper form for forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves through guided instruction from certified coaches.

2. IMPROVER TENNIS “RUSTY RACKETS” – Recurring weekly lessons
Continued skills development (progression from Beginner to Intermediate player, pre-interclub level)
The “Improvers Programme” focuses on refining and expanding upon the fundamental skills introduced in the “Quickstart Programme”. Participants will receive targeted instruction and practice opportunities to further develop their strokes, footwork, and overall technique. Coaches work with players to fine-tune their form and improve consistency and accuracy in their shots.
3. CHALLENGERS TENNIS – INTERCLUB & COMPETITIONS FOCUSED TRAINING
The “Challengers Programme” represents the next stage for players who have completed the “Improvers Programme”. It is designed for people who are committed to developing their skills, sharpening their competitive edge and potentially pursuing tennis at a more competitive level.
Advanced skill refinement
Players will receive intensive coaching and practice opportunities to improve their shot-making abilities, footwork, court coverage and overall tactical awareness. Coaches will provide personalised feedback and coaching to help players continue to take their game to the next level.
High-intensity training
The “Competitors Programme” involves high-intensity training aimed at improving players’ physical fitness, strength and endurance. Participants take part in a variety of exercises and training routines designed to increase their speed, agility and explosiveness on the field. Emphasis is placed on developing the physical attributes needed to compete at a high level and sustain peak performance during demanding matches.

4. CARDIO TENNIS – INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED GROUPS DRILLS + GAMES
Cardio Tennis is a fun, sociable tennis-based group fitness programme open to people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. A fast paced workout with heart-rate monitors and music with qualified coaches, you’ll get to hit lots of tennis balls during your class and have a great cardio workout in a non-competitive environment. With different groups for beginners, intermediate and advanced players-everyone enjoys a group tennis lesson and fun and fast workout.
