Change of code to enter courts and downstairs area.

You may have noticed we never changed the gate code!!! In the first week of October the code we have had for years and years to gain access to the courts will be changing.

Once changed you will receive an e-mail with the new code and will have to use the BLACK keypad to gain access to the courts.
The silver keypad will no longer work.

There will be two ways to gain access to the courts.
1) book a court and you will get your own unique access code
2) use our generic code that will be e-mailed out to all paid up members in the first week of October. This is to avoid people who have decided not to rejoin the club having access to a free code - we hope you understand.

N.B. The pin number for access to the downstairs area will be the same as the code for court access.

Friday Junior Club night in Term 4

Friday night Junior club night starts the first Friday in term 4, on Friday 13th October 6-7pm.

-Our head coach Jono will be on court from 6-7pm to play some games with the kids and some skills and drills.
-Pizza for $5 per person
-A fun time to hang out with other kids
-A great opportunity to meet other parents

Open to kids of all ages up to 18 years old.

This is a fabulous opportunity for the kids to come and play some fun tennis and meet a bunch of other kids. It's also a great way to come and chill on a Friday night and meet other parents in a relaxed environment whilst enjoying a slice of pizza and a beverage of your choice on our sunny deck.

As you may know MBTC is run by volunteers so this year we hope that everyone will have a turn to order and pick up pizzas, help out the coach with the kids on the court and organise the tidy up at the end of the night.

If your child is not a member but you would like to come and give it a go please e-mail us, we would love them to come and try it out.

Love Tennis and Maize Munroe - A great day at MBTC

On Sunday, 10th September, we hosted our Love Tennis open day and Maize Munroe tournament. We had a great turnout despite a short downpour at opening time!

We offered free 20min coaching sessions on two courts with coach Jono and Aiden. These filled up and kept the boys busy all morning.

Thanks to all our fabulous volunteers to help with the guests on and off the court.

We had 6 full courts for our Maize Munroe doubles tournament this year. There were three rounds, each round was the best of 8 games. Every game won put you back 15 points which made for a very close fun tournament.

Big thanks to John W for running such a successful Maize Munroe this year.
Our Maize Munroe champs this year came from Team David won which consisted of David, Dean, Nick and one of our newest members Moira.

Zespri Aims Games

In the first week of September Jacob competed in his first Zespri Aims Games.

Open to intermediate age kids around the country across 25 sports the event has an overall competitor attendance of 11,500+ (yes, that's right, more than the Olympics!).
Our only Mission Bay Tennis representative this year, Jacob's Top Dog ranking put him in the Boys Silver Division of the 90+ boys entered, where he came up against some tough opposition, most of whom are ranked well above him.

A positive attitude and some tenacious tennis over two days included 3 nail-biting tiebreakers, a couple of excellent wins, and a great tournament experience all round.

Congratulations Jacob! It's great to see you out there giving it a go!

Working Bee & Jobs around the clubhouse

We had a very successful working bee with loads of volunteers. The weather was perfect and between us all we managed to tidy up the grounds, fill a skip and spring clean the club rooms.

Thank you to everyone who turned up to help out and to Loretta, Nancy and Sandy who provided a delicious morning tea.

If you see Vaughan and Craig around the clubrooms, please thank them for the many hours they spend keeping our club and grounds up to scratch. Not only did they organise the day but spent many hours before a Every bit of maintenance or improvements in the clubrooms is done by these two outside of their day jobs!!

There is a list up on the notice board of some jobs that need to be done. Any help is much appreciated.
You may have noticed our new vanity upstairs which replaces the old vanity that was damaged by a leaking roof. Now that the roof is fixed, Craig McFall got stuck in and whipped the old- and damaged vanity out and replaced it with a new upgrade which looks a million bucks - Thank you Craig.

David and Maria (again) not satisfied with spending all Sunday morning at the working bee, they were back at it the very next week with David spraying weeds and Maria scraping moss and mould under the deck and sweeping the entrances.

Once again thank you to the volunteers who chip in here and there around the club - it all helps ease the burden on the committee and also helps keeps costs down. If you have a spare morning or afternoon, please reach out to see what jobbies you can assist with.

A Saturday morning at MBTC

If you've been to the club on a Saturday morning, you will have seen Sandy and Doug organising community play and some new junior coaching sessions. They have put a huge amount of effort into this and it has been wonderful to see a group of new junior members down at the club every Saturday morning over the winter terms having coaching.

Their level of tennis has progressed, not only because of the coaching, but also the time spent on the court hitting with their parents, and other squad members / friends. Saturday mornings at MBTC has a great family atmosphere.

We hope this group will become a beginner junior interclub team within the next year.
Some of these are the children of long-term existing members John Tonkin and Ronayne Haase, and newer members Sam Scott and Steve & Lara Boyd – encouraging the next generation of Mission Bay tennis players. We would like you all to welcome the new junior members to the club.

Community Play

This group have come through from Community Play, so they are already used to having lots of fun out on the court. Community Play is a New Zealand Tennis programme – this has been running successfully every Saturday morning at MBTC in the summer terms since 2016.

It is all about getting young children out on the court and having fun, while enhancing their ball skills, hand-eye co-ordination, and giving them a taste of the game of Tennis – a Game for Life.
Community Play exists at Mission Bay because of the input of volunteers. We would like to thank all the club members who have helped out with the programme over the years – and if it is something you would like to get involved with, please give Sandy a call on 021 294 5504 – or turn up on Saturdays at 9.30 am and say you’re here to help.

If you know any children aged 4-12, who would like to see what tennis is about, and come and give it a go, please bring them down. All equipment is provided.

Community Play will be starting again on the 1st Saturday of Term 4. October 14th – registration at 9.15, and only $5 casual or $45 for the Term.

Important Reminders

  • If you are playing with a guest, please make sure you include them in your club spark booking for $10/hr.
  • A list of jobs that need doing around the clubhouse are posted on the noticeboard. We would welcome and encourage any help completing these.
  • Please make sure if you cannot make your booking for any reason - including weather - you cancel your booking. We have Neighbours who message Jan and Vaughan any time the courts are empty, and the lights are left on. Please save them a grumpy evening text.
